1 Chronicles 6 (27th April) - Karen

1 Chronicles 6

In this chapter, we read about the tribe of Levi. The Levites were people that the Lord set apart to serve Him in the tabernacle (See Numbers 3, 4), and later in the temple (1 Chr 23 – 26).

For example, Aaron, a Levi’s descendant became Israel’s first high priest. God required all future priests to be descendants of Aaron. The rest of the Levites assisted the priests in the various tabernacle or temple duties, and assisted the people by teaching them God’s word and encouraging them to obey it.

Other familiar characters that we read often about came from this tribe:

Samuel, Vs 28
When Samuel became God’s leader and spokesman, Israel was on the brink of collapse. (See the last few chapters of Judges for a vivid picture of the moral decay and resulting decline of the nation) With God’s help, Samuel brought the nation from ruin to revival. He unified the people by showing them that God was their common Leader and that any nation focused on Him would find and fulfill is true purpose.

David, Vs 31
David did much to bring music into worship. He established songleaders and choirs to perform regularly at the temple. As a young man, David was hired to play the harp for King Saul and He also wrote many songs found in the book of Psalms.

Learning Points from:

1. The builders and craftsman who completed building the temple.
The priests and Levites had been given their responsibilities for taking care of the temple. There was another group of people: the musicians; whom the Lord used greatly through their talents that God has given them.

From this, we can see that we don’t have to be an ordained minister to have an important place in the body of believers. Builders, craftsman, worship assistants, choir members and songleaders all have significant contributions to make. God has give us a unique combination of talents. Use it to serve and honour Him.

2. Aaron and his descendants
They were told to follow the details of worship strictly commanded by God through Moses. They did not choose only those commands they wanted to obey. Note what happened to Uzzah when important details in handling the ark of the covenant were neglected (13: 6-10) We should not try to obey God selectively, choosing only commands we will obey and those we will ignore. God’s Word has authority over every aspect of our lives, not just selected portions.
