1 Chronicles 7 - 10 (29th April) - Alvin

Dear family, just some thoughts as I read these 4 chapters.

1) Our God is a covenant keeping God.
2) Our God is a intimate God
3) Worship is the key to the intimate things of God and we are the gatekeepers
4) Our God requires that we fear Him and walk in His ways.

1) As I read through these chapters filled with the many names, I was reminded once again of God’s faithfulness. As you read the many names listed down in the chapters, do not forget that these are all the names of the sons of Jacob. They are the Israelites, the people of God, the promise of God given to Abraham, that he will be a father of many nations and that his descendants will be like the stars in the heavens and the sands on the seashore. I guess the writer of Chronicles must have felt the awesomeness of God as he records down the genealogy of Israel.

2) More than that, isn’t it amazing that the writer wrote down their names? Remember, the word of God is inspired by the Holy Spirit; therefore not one single word of God is without power or purpose. That means, it wasn’t just a duty of the author to write down those names (though the purpose was also to record down the names); but rather, it shows us that our God remembers His children by NAME. WOW!! He really cares about us and knows us.

And as you read, you’ll also realized that at times certain people or clans will have a special mention such as being able men or men of valor etc. God really knows us ya? God knows you by name too, and He has written ur name in His book of life!

3) In 1Chronicles 9:17-34, we see an interesting thing. There are Levitical gatekeepers of God’s tabernacle. As I read, I can’t help relating to something I learnt recently about us being door keepers with the key of delegated authority in our hands. Isaiah 22:22 mentions this. And in this case it is the Levites who are the gatekeepers.

Now, the Levites are the worship team of those days. I believe strongly that we are reminded once again of our call. That we are to be a royal priesthood of God, and our job is to open the doors of salvation through prayer and the doors of the intimate things of God through worship. Haven’t really processed everything yet, will share more once I thought this through. In the mean time, you can refer to 1Peter 2:9 and Matthew 16:19; 18-18-20

4) 1 Chronicles 10 tells about the death of Saul and the end of his family and reign. A really sad ending for an outstanding man. In case you do not know, Saul was an outstanding fellow in man’s eyes and God was with him in the beginning of his reign. However his disobedience was his downfall and God gave his throne over to David. Even then, I believe that this ending could have been avoided, but Saul did not repent.

1 Chronicles 10:13-14 records: “So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance. But he did not inquire of the LORD; therefore He killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.”

Saul did not inquire of God; therefore God killed him. It suggests that God is waiting for Saul to turn back, and if he does, God will not kill him. Dear family, if you are far away from God, do not waste anymore time, God is waiting for you to turn back to Him and inquire of Him, and when you do, His mercies will prevail.

James 4:5-10 says: “Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”? But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
